MOZART CITY TOUR INCL. FORTRESS HOHENSALZBURG


This tour is the best way to see all the important sights of both the New and Old parts of the city all within 1.5 hrs.

The tour begins by the Palace of Mirabell built in the year 1606 for the Archbishop Wolf Dietrich and is today home to the office of the local Mayor and city offices. Then pass the Mozarteum (University of Music) one of the world’s most prestigious music academies. Passing the Marionette Theatre, you will arrive in Markart Square with the Landestheatre (The Regional Theatre), The Trinity Church a baroque masterpiece from Fischer von Erlach plus Mozart’s Wohnhaus (Mozart’s Residence), where the composer lived for many years. Crossing over the Salzach (Salt) river which was once a major transport route you will have a wonderful view of this magical city. Following the river along part of the old fortifications you will pass the Law Courts on the way to the Hellbrunn Palace where you will have a short photo stop. Hellbrunn Palace was built at the start of the 17th century to the design of the great architect Santino Solari and used as a hunting lodge and weekend residence by Salzburg’s Archbishops. On the way back to the city centre you will pass the Palace of Frohnburg and the Nonnberg Abbey, situated beneath the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress, before entering the heart of the city through the Siegmunds Gate. Once in the old city you will pass by the Festival Halls, Old University, Horse Pond, Getreidegasse and the Blasius Church. The tour finishes in Mozart Square where you will see the famous Mozart statue, Cathedral, Old Residence of the Archbishops and the Fortress Hohensalzburg.
Included in with this tour every guest will be given a ticket for a return journey up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress including the Festungsbahn (funicular) and entry into the Fortress. The impressive fortress offers fabulous views over the city and an insight into life in the city in past years. This ticket can be used at your leisure.

Part 2: Lakes and Mountains
The tour takes you into the ‘Land of Music’, the heart of the Lakes and Mountains region. Starting in the centre of the city the route takes you via Hof and Fuschl to St Gilgen on the Wolfgang Lake. St Gilgen was the birthplace of Mozart’s mother. The next stop will be at the other side of the lake in St Wolfgang where you will have free time. During your time in St Wolfgang take in some of its highlights including, the local Church with the famous winged altar which is a masterpiece from Michael Pacher in the 15th Century, the famous Hotel White Horse Inn, the setting from the operetta ‘Im Weissen Rössl’ and time to stroll through the quaint streets and alleyways.
On the return journey you will pass the picturesque Krottensee and the Castle of Hüttenstein then via the Scharfling pass along the shores of the Mondsee (Moon Lake), passing the town of the same name once famous for its Monastery. Then continuing back to Salzburg city.
Plus - As an extra highlight there will be an included boat cruise (May to October) over the Wolfgang Lake.

Itinerary:

The Mirabell Gardens:
Shown in many scenes including where Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged horse and throughout the gardens singing “Do-Re-Mi”.

The Gazebo/Hellbrunn Palace
Where Rolf and Liesl sang “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and Maria and the Baron sang “Something Good”. It is now situated within the gardens of this hunting palace, built in the first half of the 17th century. The Gazebo gives you a chance to recreate one of the movies famous scenes!

Palace of Leopoldskron:
This historical 18th Century palace and its grounds provided many locations for the movie including the lake where the boating scene took place, the terrace was also where the family drank ‘Pink Lemonade’ with the Baroness Schröder plus many other scenes.

Nonnberg Abbey:
This historical abbey founded in the year 714 was used both in the movie and the true story. In the movie the Abbey was seen many times including when the children came to the gate to ask Maria to return to their home and from where the family tried to escape at the end of the movie. Maria and the Baron were married here in 1927.

St. Gilgen/Lake Wolfgang:
This picturesque area was featured in the opening sequence of the movie. The village of St Gilgen (Mozart’s mother was born here) on the northwest side of the Lake Wolfgang is situated directly across from the famous Schafberg mountain - also seen in the movie!

Church of Mondsee:
The Sound of Music Wedding Church. This historical church of Mondsee was the location of the movie wedding between Maria and the Baron. Inside this wonderful church Maria walked down the aisle to meet the Baron at the altar.

Adventure tour into the Salt mines - let yourself into the search for the valuable ‘White Gold’.
Starting in the city of Salzburg we pass by the area of Hellbrunn, taking us directly to the Salt mines. Before entering the mine you will dress like a miner (protective clothing provided) and then travel by miner’s train into the heart of the mountain. Once inside this remarkable underground world the knowledgeable local miner/guide will amaze you with tales of the history of the salt, how it was mined, transported and used. Going down further into the caverns you can use the miners’ slides, great fun for all ages. Then be amazed within the mountain as you travel by raft across a Salt Lake. Once you have been enchanted within these underground labyrinths you will return to the outside world by miners’ train. Travel back to Salzburg passing by the Untersberg Mountain.

A fascinating opportunity to visit the picturesque area of Berchtesgaden in the neighbouring German province of Bavaria. Leaving Salzburg passing by Hellbrunn we cross the German border. Driving past the Salt mines our first stop will be at the King’s Lake – Königssee, known as ‘The prettiest lake in Germany’ and part of the Berchtesgaden National Park. Enjoy this short break to marvel at the scenery, the Bavarian mountains towering above you and proving a magnificent backdrop to the lake. We then drive to the town of Berchtesgaden, nestled in the foothills of the surrounding mountains. Enjoy your free time strolling around the centre, historical buildings, churches and perhaps a local speciality or two! Returning back to the centre of Salzburg in the late afternoon.

EAGLE`S NEST


This tour only available between May and October
This tour gives you a perfect combination of fascinating history and memorable scenery.
This tour takes us over the German border into Bavaria passing by the Salt mines. Our first stop is up in the area of ‘Obersalzberg’, which was once used as a base of the Third Reich, the area where Hitler, Göring and Bormann once had property. From ‘Obersalzberg’ we change to a special bus for the amazing journey up the 6.5 km (4 miles) long road to the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlstein House). The journey is an amazing adventure and once you arrive in the upper car park a 124 m (406 ft) long tunnel leads you into the mountain. Once inside the mountain the lift takes you within less than a minute directly up into the Eagle’s Nest building. Originally given to Hitler as a 50th birthday present by Martin Bormann it was used as a conference centre. Hitler had many meetings here. The building itself is a masterpiece perched 1834 m (6017ft) on top of the Kehlstein mountains. There will be some free time to explore the old conference room, dining area and small tea room and terraces with your guide explaining all the history relating to this interesting area.
After returning back to the valley there will be a short stop in the picturesque town of Berchtesgaden before returning to Salzburg. This tour gives you a perfect combination of fascinating history and memorable scenery.

A memorable experience awaits you with a journey back through time with a visit to the Ice Caves, a wonder of Mother Nature at her best.
From Salzburg the tour travels via the Salzach valley to Werfen where you will have a view of the 11th Century Hohenwerfen Fortress. Once you arrive in the parking area you will then go up via cable car and then walk to the entrance of the Ice Caves. Prepare yourselves for an amazing ice experience, with an average inside temperature in summer of 0 degrees centigrade! This is your opportunity to walk through the Ice Caverns accompanied by a local guide. The Ice Caves at Werfen are the largest in the world and are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to admire the natural ice sculptures within this world of ice giants!

With this tour take a journey back into the Middle Ages.

Travelling via the Salzach Valley you will arrive in Werfen where you will have your first views of the impressive Hohenwerfen Fortress - featured in the movie ‘Where Eagle’s Dare’ and ‘Sound of Music’. From the car park a small mountain lift will take you up to this 11th century Fortress. Once within the Fortress grounds you can participate in a show of flying birds of prey or follow the footsteps of former Knights by going inside the fortress. From the fortress towers you will have amazing views into the Tennen and Hagengebirge mountains.
Returning back to the centre of Salzburg in the late afternoon.

X-Mas
SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT


This tour is only available from December 1 to January, 6
If you would like to visit this world famous town where the well renowned Christmas song was first performed in 1818 then this tour is a must.
The tour leaves Salzburg and takes us to Oberndorf, where ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’ was performed for the first time in 1818. By visiting the Silent Night Chapel and the Silent Night Museum you will find all the information about this world famous piece and even have the opportunity to hear it in many different languages. During the Advent period there is a special Post Office within the Museum enabling your Christmas post to be sent with a special stamp and postmark. We then travel over the border into the neighbouring town of Laufen; this old Bavarian town has its own unique place in history from the transportation of Salt. During the return trip to Salzburg appreciate your experience whilst listening to traditional Advent music.
