WICKED, the spellbinding and spectacular hit musical, tells the untold story of the legendary witches from L. Frank Baum's classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy famously triumphed in Oz, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, brings to life the captivating, surprising tale of how a misunderstood, green girl named Elphaba became 'wicked' but her unlikely friend, Glinda, became 'good'. The exceptional creative team that has brought this captivating story to life on stage includes many of Broadway's most celebrated creative talent. When WICKED opened on Broadway, it worked its magic on critics and audiences alike and won 15 major awards including the Grammy and three Tony Awards. Today WICKED is one of the most successful shows in theatre history.

Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a libretto by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a re-imagining of L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. The musical tells the stories of Glinda and Elphaba, two young witches who eventually become the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively, and is set mostly prior to Dorothy's arrival from Kansas. The plot also includes several references to the classic 1939 film.

The musical debuted on Broadway on October 30, 2003. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento, and starred Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Idina Menzel as Elphaba, and Joel Grey as The Wizard. Although the production received mixed reviews and was panned by The New York Times, it has proved to be a favorite among patrons. The Broadway production's success spawned productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, London's West End, Tokyo, and Stuttgart, along with a North American tour that has visited over 30 cities in Canada and the United States.

Wicked has broken box office records around the world; it holds weekly-gross-takings records in New York, London, Chicago and Los Angeles, and the record for fastest opening £100,000 in the West End (slightly over one hour). The West End production has played to more than 800,000 people, and the North American tour has been seen by over two million patrons.The show was nominated for ten 2004 Tony Awards, winning those for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design. It also won six Drama Desk Awards.
