By Igor Stravinsky | 17 - 27 March
"Another innovative and varied program from a company that is soaring"
The Age
At the core of Stravinsky's great opera, The Rake's Progress, is a battle between good and evil. Inspired by a series of 18th century paintings by William Hogarth, Stravinsky's opera depicts the tumultuous journey of Tom Rakewell from man to monster. Acclaimed Director John Bell (Bell Shakespeare) works with Music Director Richard Gill who will conduct this timeless story of love, morality and forgiveness.
Opening with an idyllic duet between Tom and his beloved Anne Trulove, the pleasantries quickly unravel with the introduction of the malevolent Nick Shadow - the Devil in disguise. The opera tracks Tom's downfall as his temptation for material happiness leads him into madness he cannot escape.
The Rake's Progress showcases strong dramatic roles in a powerful libretto by WH Auden and Chester Kallman.

'None of the characters as we portray them is inherently evil, but rather all are fallible human beings, with whom, at various points, the audience is invited to feel empathy.'
Gordon Kerry
Midnight Son was commissioned with the financial assistance of the Music Board of the Australia Council and The Ian Potter Cultural Trust.
Set against the backdrop of suburban Melbourne, Midnight Son is a modern-day operatic tragedy. Contemporary Australian composer Gordon Kerry and acclaimed playwright and librettist, Louis Nowra explore how passion and obsession can morally blind otherwise normal people, leading them to lose control of their lives with devastating consequences.
This commision builds on the success of Victorian Opera's tradition of new Australian work at the Malthouse Theatre which includes Rembrandt's Wife.

The Arts Centre, Playhouse
'What a gift to be asked to work on sets for the sublime Figaro in the intimate environment of the Playhouse with my colleagues, Richard, Jean-Pierre, Christina and Paul - our third collaboration together on a Mozart opera, following Don G and The Flute - how could I refuse?'
Richard Roberts, Set Designer
Victorian Opera is delighted to present its fourth Mozart opera - the ravishingly beautiful The Marriage of Figaro. This production brings to life a stylish world where social position and knowing one's place are everything. Couched in a comic framework by Lorenzo da Ponte, the opera examines the complexities of marriage, relationships, infidelity, infatuation and lasting commitment.
The Marriage of Figaro blends breathtaking arias and ensembles with irrepressible characters and chaotic humour. Victorian Opera's new production reunites the team who bought you The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni with Richard Gill conducting and award-winning Jean-Pierre Mignon directing an acclaimed ensemble cast.

Master Peter's Puppet Show / What Next?
by Manuel de Falla / Elliott Carter
Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre
'We're approaching the two as cycles of transition between worlds. A massive event of destruction marks the end of one opera, and the opening of the next.'
Nancy Black, Director, Black Hole Theatre
In the stunning surrounds of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, experience a double bill of two special 20th century operas which question our ideas of identity and the very nature of our being.
Based on an episode from Don Quixote, Master Peter's Puppet Show delves into the minds of the protagonists, as lines are blurred between reality and fiction. Victorian Opera, in collaboration with Black Hole Theatre takes the concept of a show within a show one step further.
What Next? is the only opera written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winning composer Elliott Carter. The opera explodes with vitality as it looks at how six people regain consciousness after an accident and try to recall who they are.
2011 Developing Artist Daniel Carter embarks on his debut as lead conductor in this enigmatic double bill.
