Tetro del Giglio

The birth of the Teatro del Giglio was more than three centuries ago, circa 1600. At that time the most important theatrical events took place in the "Court Theatre", subsidized by the prince or duke. Important performances were given in the halls of great palaces.

In Lucca, two rooms worked as a theater: one of the Praetorian Palace, called the Hall of the Palace of the Podesta and 'villages. The rooms were small and not very suitable: the increasing development of theatrical art and the growing demands of the public in a city like Lucca, flourishing trade, commerce and crafts, they increasingly feel the need for a theater.

By decree of 19 August 1672, the Council of the Republic of Lucca tasked a committee of citizens to study the possibility of adapting the old theater to build a monastery at the Jesuit church of St. Jerome (Pope Clement IX had at that time abolished the order). The architects and theater lovers volunteered to build a fairly large stage, and special arrangements were devised in the construction of the hall, to allow good visibility to the public.

On January 14, 1675 the solemn inauguration of the "Public Theatre" took place, designed by architect Francesco Buonamici and implemented of Giovanni Maria Padreddio. One of his documents mentioned that the Theatre is "sixty arms length, twenty-seven north, south, and the clock by wide, and sixteen in height, had the perspective of masonry, as wide as the stage and along the hall ten arms, two inputs three tiers of boxes or cabinets, raised on stone pillars, all simply furnished in the same way, except the middle one, which was adorned with decoration to welcome the most excellent Lords of government. "
