The BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) is Australia's premier mile and a half handicap and considered one of the toughest in the world to win.
Run on the third Saturday of October at Caulfield racecourse, the BMW Caulfield Cup is considered the key lead-up race to the Emirates Melbourne Cup. Twelve horses have won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double, most recently champion New Zealand mare Ethereal in 2001.
Caulfield is the Melbourne Racing Club's premier venue and the Caulfield Cup is the club's feature race of its week long, three meeting Carnival.
The Caulfield Carnival opens with the Group 1 The Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) for three-year-old colts and geldings, while the middle day of the Carnival features the Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) for three-year-old fillies.
