2010 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

The 2010 Spanish Grand Prix (formally the LI Gran Premio de España) will be the fifth round of the 2010 Formula One season. It is scheduled to be held on May 9, 2010 at the Circuit de Catalunya.[1] If it is held as scheduled, it will be the first European race of the 2010 season.

It is expected that Virgin Racing will bring a significantly different chassis to the race, accommodating the necessary expanded fuel tank. Lotus F1 Racing also will have significant new modifications, Team Principal Tony Fernandes said.[2] Mercedes GP also have a major upgrade to their cars ,Ross Brawn said.

Defending champion Jenson Button leads the Championship by ten points from Mercedes' Nico Rosberg. Rosberg is a point clear of Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Button's McLaren team-mate. Three other drivers remain within 20 points of the leader.

McLaren's maximum score in Shanghai gives them a 19 point lead in the Constructors' Championship from Ferrari, with Red Bull a further 17 points behind. Mercedes and Renault also boast significant points totals.

Last year's Spanish Grand Prix was won by Jenson Button for Brawn GP, with Ferrari pair Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa also past winners. Michael Schumacher has won the race a record six times. Massa is the only winner since the 1980s to win a Spanish Grand Prix and not have won at some stage the Formula One World Championship. Ferrari have won six of the last ten Spanish Grands Prix.
