Introducing the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia
In 2007, the rumors gained momentum about a possible second Spanish Grand Prix. The former Grand Prix of Europe, held in Germany, was facing financial problems and eventually disappeared. Soon after, the world of Formula 1 started to speculate on the recurrence of the event, with Valencia as the first city in the list. The local government of Valencia approved the plans in February 2007 to amend the city's streets to welcome the amazing Formula 1 cars. After lengthy negotiations, Ecclestone officially confirmed the new event with the signing of a contract on June 1 of that year. The race was introduced with the new name of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe.
Design Valencia Street Circuit
The Valencia Street Circuit is located around the Marina Real Juan Carlos I, which was the basis of the 32 nd America's Cup, one of the sailing competitions in the world. Herman Tilke designed the track for 5,419 km, but after the first race in 2008 he faced criticism from those who felt that the track was boring because the pilots did not have the opportunity to move forward. During a press conference after the first race on August 24, 2008, Jorge Martínez Aspar, President of the official organization confirmed that would address the criticism of the pilots for future events. They kept their promise and in 2009 and 2010 the route was optimized in order to meet the expectations of pilots and visitors. Changed the path extending from the city to the port and now connects two of the great sea avenues. It is one of the fastest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, with a record lap of 1:38,683 of Timo Glock in 2009.
