12 Madrigals

Libretto by Salvatore Sciarrino based on Il tradimento per l'onore by Giacinto Andrea Cicognini, with an elegy by Claude Le Jeune.

A timeless "tragedy of love, blood and inevitability" is what Salvatore Sciarrino called his opera Luci mie traditrici (My Treacherous Eyes) . He was inspired by a Baroque drama based on the Renaissance duke and composer Gesualdo's murder of his wife and her lover.

In spite of her profound love for her husband, Duchess Malaspina falls passionately in love with one of their guests. Their secret assignation is betrayed by a servant who is unhappily in love with his mistress. At first the dishonoured duke forgives his wife; at night, however, he reveals the corpse of the guest at their marriage bed and also kills her. - At the end of the opera, the duke and duchess find themselves in the intimacy of the first scene again. Their will to love fulfils them as much as the acceptance of the inevitable. The duchess dies a death of love: "In certain ways, the victim views her end with tender eyes." (Sciarrino)
Luci mie traditrici is a work of essentials: there are only four protagonists, and Sciarrino makes their feelings known only through their singing, with endless nuances and a great sense of dramatic tension.
