New Year's Concert 2012 with Franz Welser-Möst

The Vienna Philharmonic has selected the General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera, Franz Welser-Möst, to conduct the New Year's Concert 2013. As Philharmonic Chairman Clemens Hellsberg emphasized, the invitation was extended not only on the basis of the convincing artistic success of the New Year's Concert 2011 which was conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, but also in recognition of his stellar collaboration with the Philharmonic as well as in the Vienna State Opera.

Following Clemens Krauss, Josef Krips, Willi Boskovsky, Herbert von Karajan and Nikolaus Harnoncourt,

Franz Welser-Möst will become the sixth Austrian conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert.

"With the invitation to Franz Welser-Möst to conduct the 2013 New Year's Concert, the Vienna Philharmonic acknowledges our shared artistic work in the opera and in concert, characterized in the last years by a continuously deepening mutual musical understanding, which has resulted in uplifting reciprocal inspiration," commented Vienna Philharmonic Chairman Clemens Hellsberg.

Franz Welser-Möst has been Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002, and beginning in September 2010 will become the General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. In this capacity he will also be responsible for the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the musicians of which make up the membership of the Vienna Philharmonic. Franz Welser-Möst conducted the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time in January 1998 at the Salzburg Mozart Festival, and in that same year was invited to conduct a Philharmonic subscription concert.

The first encounter between orchestra and conductor took place when Franz Welser-Möst made his debut at the Vienna State Opera with a performance of Rossini's "L'italiana in Algeri" in 1987. In September 2003 he garnered much acclaim when on short notice and without rehearsal he conducted a performance of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde".

Since then, Franz Welser-Möst has worked regularly with the Vienna Philharmonic, with the relationship between conductor and orchestra deepening during new productions of Richard Strauss' "Arabella" and the complete cycle of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen", which began in December 2007.

In the summer of 2009, Franz Welser-Möst conducted the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms and the Lucerne Festival.

Franz Welser-Möst also conducted the 2012 New Years Day concert at the Musikverien so everyone is delighted to have him back for the 2013 concert.

The History of the Vienna Philharmonic´s New Year's Eve Concerts
The famous New Years Day concert that is televised worldwide is also performed on New Years Eve, the Orchestra performs the same concert that is seen on New Years Day. The music of Johann Strauss goes all the way back to the "King of the Waltz" himself.

The historical facts, however, tell quite a different story. Despite the fact that many future Philharmonic members began their careers in Strauss' orchestra, the "Philharmonic Concert Association", as it was called at the time, generally ignored the most charming and "Viennese" music which has ever been written. Probably the musicians did not wish to jeopardize the social advancement they had experienced upon becoming members of the Philharmonic by associating themselves with dance and entertainment music.

It should be noted, however, that the Strauss dynasty enjoyed the highest respect among great composers of the day, such as Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms. The Philharmonic musicians themselves, through several encounters with Johann Strauss, had opportunity to observe the importance of this music and the charismatic personality of its creator, which had enraptured all of Europe
