Melbourne Chorale continues its exploration of Mozart's choral work with his great Requiem. In 1790 a mysterious visitor called on the ailing Mozart to commission a setting of the requiem mass. This visitor has travelled through history as a mythical messenger beckoning the dying composer to join him. Though left incomplete at Mozart's death, the music that the enigmatic commission produced is an intense and deeply lyrical meditation on death.

Completed in 1988 to celebrate the millennium celebration of Russia's conversion to Christianity, Rodion Shchedrin's The Sealed Angel draws on the profound traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church and on the rich musical language so vividly heard in Rachmaninov's Vespers .

Nikolai Leskov's story The Sealed Angel , written in 1873, concerns an icon whose beauty and power is so formidable that the powers-that-be decide to have it sealed. Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin does not look to tell the story through his music, but employs musical resources to focus attention on themes such as faith, power, beauty, and the magical power of art.
