About Jazz em Agosto 2007 Tickets |
Pianos, basses, tubas & voices provide the connecting thread which holds together the programme for Jazz em Agosto 2007, bringing music and line-ups never before heard in Portugal, as the event has been doing for the past 23 years. Without seeking to be prophetic, Jazz em Agosto turns the spotlight on what might be termed fresh and new in the flourishing urban jazz scenes of the US and Europe. A portrait of jazz as played today, celebrating its diversity, its artistic roots, calculated risks and technical rigour, in contrast to the prevailing winds of unending output and endless uniformity, hostage to the demand for facile superficiality. In other words, Jazz em Agosto aims to strike out on new adventures, trusting that the audiences it has created will welcome surprises and respond with curiosity.
As one of a small constellation of international jazz festivals united by a similar approach and attitude, Jazz em Agosto 2007 devises its programme around appearances by two of great historical figures of jazz, who have each made their own visionary contribution: Muhal Richard Abrams and Ornette Coleman. Both will be giving talks/lectures in their own right, shedding light on their personal credos. Two documentaries will receive their Portuguese premi¨¨re, focussing on leading jazz musicians: Albert Ayler ( My Name is Albert Ayler , Kasper Collin, 2005) and Ornette Coleman (Ornette, Made in America , Shirley Clarke, 1985). This audiovisual facet is something that Jazz em Agosto will seek to develop in subsequent years.
Within this basic framework, Jazz em Agosto 2007 will again feature innovative European jazz: Hubbub from France, representing the reductionist and deconstructionist school, Ronin de Nik B?rtsch, from Switzerland, who tends to defy classification in his ?after? post-modernism, Crimetime Orchestra , from Norway, yet another bright light from the Scandinavian scene, Quartet Noir , from Switzerland, France and the US, showing us what musical empathy can do, Timbre , from Germany, Austria and the US, a superlative vocal quartet dedicated to improvisation, and Jo?lle L¨¦andre, on solo bass, with his own take on modern greats. And of course, from Portugal we have Carlos Z¨ªngaro and Jorge Lima
Barreto, resuming a special partnership, and the first appearance by the new Low Frequency Tuba Band , with the outstanding S¨¦rgio Carolino heading a line-up of top international tuba players. And the new project from the American bass played Joe Fonda, Bottoms Out/Loaded Basses , fits perfectly into the musical paradigm which Jazz em Agosto has claimed as its own.
Welcome to Jazz em Agosto 2007 , designed to refresh the outlook of all those who believe in the primacy of art.
