There are three weapons in fencing: epee, foil and sabre. My event is women's epee where the objective is to hit your opponent first, anywhere on their body. Epee was traditionally the duelling weapon (the target area is the whole body), foil was the training weapon (the target area is the torso) and sabre was the cavalry weapon (the target area is from the waist up, including arms and head). Today, all three weapons are contested at an Olympic level by men and women.
